Julian Andersen, publisher and chief executive officer of ECM Publishers, Inc., said on Thursday that Jeff Athmann, president and chief operating officer, has resigned effective Jan. 16, 2009. Athmann reportedly has accepted a leadership and ownership position with a Minnesota company that is not in the publishing industry. He will become a co-owner and CEO of a major, well-respected environmental service company in Minnesota. Athmann began working for Elmer Andersen in January of 1983, serving in many capacities including keeping farm records for the Andersen farm and learning about the newspaper business. When ECM purchased the Scotsman in Cambridge in the mid-1980s, Athmann was named manager. He later became manager of the ABC Newspapers group in Anoka County. As the company grew, Athmann was appointed president and chief operating officer, positions he has held to the current date. Athmann has been instrumental in leading the growth of ECM Publishers, Inc., which includes 15 community weekly newspapers reaching 162,787 homes every week and seven shopper publications which reach more than 240,370 homes every week. "Jeff has been an exemplary leader in ECM. He was an apt student of Elmer L. Andersen, ECM's founder," Julian Andersen said. Remarking on his decision, Athmann stated, "I have the greatest respect and admiration for the Andersen family and all of the dedicated associates at ECM Publishers. I appreciate the loyalty and long relationships with customers, readers and community leaders who have supported the company during my career at ECM. Every day was a wonderful and gratifying experience." Athmann has also served on the board of the Minnesota Newspapers Association and was currently holding the position of first vice president. He was slated to become the Association's next president at the annual MNA convention Jan. 29-31. Marge Winkelman, currently a vice president at ECM, has been appointed interim president of ECM. A process to select a new president will begin in a few months, Andersen said. |
