The Ranger alpine ski teams kicked off their season on Friday, Dec. 21 at the Wild Mountain Invitational. With 28 boys teams and 25 girls teams competing, this is the second biggest high school ski race in Minnesota.
The Ranger girls stayed on course and finished 13th in team standings, led by junior Nicky Kumerow, who narrowly missed the podium with a 12th place finish among 142 skiers.
Ciara Robinson and Mallory Messin, also juniors, came in 50th and 87th, respectively. Senior Carly Bass missed a gate in her first run, but came back in her second run to finish 96th.
BOYS TAKE 20th
The Ranger boys went into the meet with high expectations, but experienced trouble.
No. 1 seed Scott Brunjes had small errors on both runs that cost him valuable points, while Shane Sampair didn’t finish his second run, and Tyler Raarup was disqualified on his first run.
Senior Brett Stolberg led the way for the Rangers, placing 35th out of 168 skiers, followed by Kevin Gamelin in 53rd place. As a team, the boys placed 20th of 28 teams.
The Rangers first conference meet is home Thursday, Jan. 3, against Mounds View at Wild Mountain.
