A simple treat like beef jerky, candy, granola bars, a book or magazine, a short note from home, are just a few of the items the city of Stacy is hoping to collect to brighten the spirits of approximately 1,000 Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers being deployed to Iraq on Feb. 10, 2009. The city of Stacy will be working on partnerships with local Schools, Churches and other interested community organizations to bring a touch of home to these brave men and women in the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division by sending care packages, cards and letters, and much more. The city of Stacy is working with the organization America Supporting Americans (ASA), a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization that links individual units in all branches of the military with communities across the country. “This is all about supporting our troops,” said Linda Patterson, president and founder of ASA, who started the program by convincing her hometown to “adopt” her brother’s unit in Vietnam. Her brother was killed in Vietnam but the organization has stood the test of time and continues to boost morale throughout the world. For more information about this organization, visit www.asa-usa.org. Collection stations will be set up at locations in Stacy including City Hall, Stacy Wine & Sprits and the Stacy Bar & Grill. The following is a short list of suggested items the troops need: · Books, magazines and movies (new or used) · Board games, playing cards, Frisbees, dice and crossword puzzles · Treats and snacks (beef jerky, nuts, candy, granola bars) · Dry soups and cereal · Microwave snacks (popcorn, soup, noodles) · Powdered drink mix for water (Crystal Light, Gatorade, lemonade) · Socks · Baby wipes · Eye drops · Small cans of shaving cream · Letters of support and appreciation · Non-perishable items to remind them of home All items and cash donations to help pay for postage and to buy items for these soldiers will be accepted at the Stacy City Hall, 30955 Forest Blvd. Stacy, MN 55079. Business hours are Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to volunteer to help organize care packages, contact Lynda Schmidt (Utility Billing/Account Clerk) at 651-464-4486 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
