A major commercial redevelopment project in Forest Lake received good news on Tuesday. The city of Forest Lake was informed by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development that it has been awarded a redevelopment grant for the Northland Mall project in the amount of $897,928. The DEED grant will be utilized to help with infrastructure improvements including changes to Highway 61 to serve the Northland Mall redevelopment plan. Pace Development of Bemidji has purchased the mall and will redevelop much of the existing building as a new home for Marketplace Foods, Forest Lake’s oldest grocery store. With the DEED news arriving this week, the developer is now free to formulate final plans for the site and begin construction of the first of several free standing buildings that will be used by existing Northland Mall lease holders who plan to relocate. Demolition steps for portions of the mall building will likely begin late this spring with construction of the new grocery store and a new off-sale liquor store to follow. The new Marketplace Foods operation could be open by summer of 2010. The grant was announced in a March 20 letter to the city from Dan McElroy, commissioner of DEED. A formal resolution from Forest Lake City Council accepting the grant will be needed before the city can begin drawing funds.
