The Washington County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday authorized a modification of the memorandum of agreement with the University of Minnesota Extension for 4-H youth development programs, services, and staffing. The agreement will provide for two full-time employees through September 15, 2009. The move means that the county 4-H program will have funding through the summer and for the Minnesota State Fair. The county will realize $37,684 in savings through the remainder of 2009. The action came as the county board was approving $3.1 million in spending reductions in the 2009 county budget in anticipation of cuts in state aid that are expected as the state makes reductions in its budget in the face of a projected $4.6 to 6.4 billion shortfall in the next state fiscal period. These spending reductions incorporated the savings from the prior action to eliminate 21 county employee positions of which 19 are currently vacant. The $3.1 million reduction is equal to a 2 percent reduction in county operating expenses.
