Clint Riese Staff Writer Adetached garage behind a rental unit at 957 SW 7th Ave. went up in flames just before noon on Friday. The Forest Lake Fire Department contained the flames and was still spraying it down at 12:30 p.m. A Forest Lake firefighter was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul by ambulance after injuring a leg. He was treated and released. Eric Groheler, a maintenance worker at a neighboring apartment complex, took notice when he saw two men “hysterically” kicking at the garage’s door before the flames sprung up. Groheler assisted the men and found a motorcycle on fire inside the garage. He grabbed a fire extinguisher, but it was too late. “It just wouldn’t go out,” Groheler said. The men retreated as flames filled the structure. “It went quick,” Groheler said. “There was a little explosion. I think the bike went up.” Fire Chief Gary Sigfrinius said the fire spread to a second garage unit before firefighters could contain the blaze. Monday morning brought another fire for the department to combat. A grass fire filled the ditch along the onramp to I-35 South from Highway 8. High winds complicated matters for the firemen, who had to run along the shoulder of the road to keep up. |
