A 2006 Forest Lake graduate narrowly missed an incursion with Iranians in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend.
According to parents for Marine LCpl Reggie Reinsberg, their son was on-board the USS Cleveland, which was ahead of three U.S. Navy ships that were confronted by five boats, suspected to be from the Islamic Republic of Iran Revolutionary Guard Navy.
“It was pretty hairy,” said Mark Reinsberg, Reggie’s father.
Mark said that his son was in the strike group that was harassed by the Iranians in international waters on their way to Kuwait from the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, Jan. 5. The Navy reports that it began as the USS Port Royal, USS Hopper and USS Ingraham were traveling in formation after having finished a routine transit through the strait.
The United States claims Iranian vessels deliberately sped towards its warships despite warnings to stay away. The Navy posted on its Web site that the Iranian boats “maneuvered aggressively in close proximity of the Hopper.”
That action almost triggered an exchange of fire. Mark said that Reggie, who is in a Marine Expeditionary Unit, actually saw the smaller Iranian boats speed towards the USS Hopper, a missile destroyer.
“They all got prepared to fire on them,” Mark said.
