Cliff Buchan News Editor Twenty-one candidates are in the running for the top school job in ISD 831. School Board President Bill Bresin said on Monday that board members, working in concert with the district’s search consultant, will begin their independent review duties today (Thursday). The application period for the Forest Lake superintendent of schools closed on Wednesday, April 15. The search for a new superintendent hit the board table this winter when Lynn Steenblock, the current school chief, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the school year on June 30. He has been on the job in Forest Lake for nine years. By today, consultant Rosemary Schneiderhan of the ADM Group, Mound, hopes to have the field of 21 narrowed to 10 or 12 candidates, said Bresin and Ron Spies, director of administration and human resources and the board’s point man from the administration. “The idea is to continue to narrow the field [of candidates],” Spies said. For today’s review process, board members will meet individually with Schneiderhan to review resumes and applications from the 10 or 12 candidates. Based on district established criteria and board input, the list will be narrowed to six or seven candidates who will be asked to meet with the full school board for formal public interviews. Any local or in-district candidates who are in the running to replace Steenblock will be considered during the first interviews, the school board has directed. The first round of public candidate interviews could take place the week of April 27 with Thursday, April 30 the early target date. That schedule is tied to the availability of all seven school board members, Bresin said. If needed, the consultant has added Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 as options. Based on the round of first interviews, the field will be reduced further to two or three finalists. Community site visits, possibly during the week of May 4, will be scheduled by board members for the finalists. Final interviews with the board will then take place, possibly during the week of May 11. Day-long sessions are being planned to allow time for district staff and community members to meet the finalists. Bresin said it is his desire to have all seven board members taking part in the process. With dates hard to pin down, he said the schedule outlined by the consultant could be extended by a week. He said the board will follow all Open Meeting Law rules in calling and conducting meetings. The final candidate could be named by May 20 and a contract offer prepared for the board’s regular June meeting on Thursday, May 28, he said. That would give a full month for the new superintendent to be on the job by July 1 or thereabouts, he added. The board’s June meeting will move to the last Thursday in May because of commencement exercises on Thursday, June 4, the regular meeting night for the school board. Spies, who has yet to see the final list of candidates, said it would be logical to conclude that most are from the Upper Midwest with some likely to be in-state candidates. |
