For the second straight year, the Forest Lake FFA Chapter has been awarded the Dahlberg Trophy as the top FFA Chapter in Minnesota’s Region IV. The award, presented on April 7 at the Region IV Banquet and Awards Program, recognizes the chapter’s success in career development events, leadership involvement, and professional development activities. Region IV includes the following school districts: Academy for Sciences and Agriculture, Andover, Anoka, Blaine, Buffalo, Champlin Park, Chisago Lakes, Foley, Forest Lake, Hastings, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Milaca, Mora, North Branch, North East Metro, Ogilvie, Princeton, Rush City, Sauk Rapids Rice, School of Environmental Studies (MN Zoo) and Stillwater. “Individually we tried our best, and together the year has been a huge success,” said Forest Lake Chapter President Erin Daninger, one of the 16 members of the local chapter who traveled to the award ceremony at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School. FFA advisor and Agricultural Education Department Chair Bob Marzolf echoed Daninger’s comments. “This group of FFA members is energetic, active and motivated,” he said. “They are all very deserving of this recognition.” In addition to the chapter accomplishments, members also accepted leadership roles in Region IV for next year. Daninger, a junior, was elected region president, and she will lead members of the 19 area chapters and serve on the Minnesota FFA Student Board of Directors. Junior Bailey Schwartz was elected Region IV Secretary and the 2009-2010 Treasurer is sophomore Andrew Miron. Alex Murdock, another sophomore, took first place honors in talent and will represent the region at the Minnesota FFA Convention at the end of the month. The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members — all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture — as part of 7439 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National FFA Organization changed its name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The Forest Lake Senior High Agricultural Education Department offers courses and internship opportunities in the areas of animal science, plant science, natural resource science, mechanics, agri-business and leadership development. Students are also members of the Forest Lake FFA.
