Date set for Pat Cheyne Memorial CSF Golf Tournament PDF Print
Wednesday, 22 April 2009
Monday, July 20 has been set for the first Pat Cheyne Memorial CSF Golf Tournament in Forest Lake.

The golf outing, sponsored by the Community Scholarship Foundation of ISD 831, will be in memory of the long-time teacher and coach in Forest Lake who died in 2006.

Roger Cheyne, husband of the late Forest Lake resident, will serve as tournament director.

Both Pat and Roger Cheyne worked as golf coaches at Forest Lake High School.

The event will be hosted at Forest Hills Golf Club in Forest Lake.

A minimum of 100 golfers are being recruited. Teams will consist of four players.

The entry cost is $100 per person with $25 of the fee going directly to support the CSF.

The local non-profit scholarship group is now preparing to award some $75,000 in scholarships this spring.

A best ball format is being planned. The 18-hole tournament will tee off at 9 a.m. with lunch and awards following at around 2 p.m.

CSF Board members Jim Friend and Brian Raabe are co-chairs for the committee organizing the golf tournament.

They are now recruiting players and hole sponsorships for the July 20th event.

For more information, call Friend at 651-982-2020 or Raabe at 651-982-2026. Single entrants are welcome as well as full teams of four players.

Dollar update

Joe Lefto, chair of the recently concluded “A Dollar for a Scholar” program at retail outlets in the area, reported to the CSF Board on April 16 that some $1500 was raised.

Board Chair Lee Sinna said the drive was successful in raising funds and providing valuable exposure for the scholarship program.

Customers at retail stores in the area were encouraged to buy CSF placards for $1 each which were signed by the individual and posted on walls and in display areas.

Thanks to the positive momentum from the first year of the program, the board expressed a willingness to continue with the program next year.

Board members agreed that the “dollar” program could be expanded to other retail locations, including bars and restaurants, and offered to the public for a longer period in order to maximize public donations.

The March drive was for 11 days, a period the board felt could be extended.

2009 update

The CSF Board also learned last week that 158 applications have been received for scholarships this spring.

A  total of 117 current seniors at Forest Lake High School and 41 graduates now enrolled in a post-secondary education program, are seeking financial assistance from the CSF.

Winners will be announced this spring.
