It was a fact-finding mission for Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, R-Woodbury, on Thursday as she spent an hour at Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake. Health care professionals from as far away as Waite Park were in Forest Lake to express their concerns to the congresswoman. Rep. Bachmann learned that on average, nursing homes in Minnesota are losing $23 a day per patient on federal Medicare reimbursements to care facilities and that since 2000, more than 40 of the 430 nursing homes in the state have been forced to close. In addition to health care professionals from Waite Park, individuals from Big Lake, Monticello, Zimmerman, Stillwater, Woodbury and Forest Lake were on hand to share issues with Rep. Bachmann. The Birchwood Health Care Center staff hosted the event which attracted 30 representatives from health care facilities and state groups representing workers and professional organizations. Health care professionals said they feared quality care will suffer if reimbursements continue to remain flat or are cut as may happen under Gov. Pawlenty's unallotment process that he will use to balance the state budget after July 1. (Photo By Cliff Buchan)
