More positive test scores for ISD 831 students PDF Print
Thursday, 02 July 2009
Elementary and junior high level students in the Forest Lake Area Schools district scored above state averages in nearly every tested grade level in the most recent MCA-II tests, according to results issued on Wednesday, July 1 by the Minnesota Department of Education.

The MDE report showed that Forest Lake students exceeded state averages in math at every single grade level, and exceeded the state in reading in all grade levels except 7th grade, which fell short of the state average by1.8 percent.

This report, for students in grades 3 – 8, was the second set of results released this summer by MDE.

The first report, released in mid June, showed that Forest Lake 11th graders achieved a massive 20-percent increase in average MCA-II math scores and exceeded state graduation standards by nearly 10 percent.

In the reading portion of the tests, Forest Lake 10th graders saw scores increase by 8 percent from last year, and they outscored state averages this year by a full 6 percentage points.

“We have seen a terrific increase in our math scores almost across the board, and our reading scores continue to surpass state averages, overall,” said Dr. Linda Madsen, who began her new position as superintendent of Forest Lake Area Schools on July 1.

“This tells us we’re heading in the right direction.

“Our emphasis on improving our secondary math program has obviously paid off,” Madsen said.

“This year we will be adding two new reading teachers and a new literacy curriculum at the elementary level, which we hope will boost results in coming years by even more.”
