Alpine boys lose conference lead to Stillwater; girls fall, too PDF Print
Wednesday, 23 January 2008
The Forest Lake Alpine ski teams met up with perennial powerhouse Stillwater on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Wild Mountain. Anticipation was high for the boys meet, as the race could ultimately determine the conference champion.

The Ranger boys were led by Scott Brunjes, Brett Stolberg and Tyler Brunjes, who took second, fifth and seventh places, respectively.

Unfortunately, Shane Sampair, Kevin Gamelin and Kevin Schmidt all experienced mishaps on one of their runs, leaving the Ranger boys wondering what might have been, as they fell by a score of 35-20.

On the girls’ side, the depth of the Pony squad proved to be too much for Forest Lake. Carly Bass came in second, but the other Ranger point-earners — Nicky Kumerow in seventh, Ciara Robinson in ninth and Krista Kirchner in 10th — weren’t enough for a win. The final score was 39-16.

The Alpine teams also competed Jan. 18 in the non-conference Welch Invitational, the largest high school meet in the nation. Three skiers from each team raced on a long course, and three others compete on a short course. The highlight for the Rangers was a podium finish by Brett Stolberg, who took ninth of 96 racers on the boys long course.

“We had a great day at Welch. This is the first time we’ve had a podium finisher at a big race during my tenure, head coach Kyle Oberg said.

“Also, the girls had an awesome team day completing all the runs with no bobbles. Twelve clean runs at Welch is a huge accomplishment.”

The Rangers were at it again on Tuesday, facing White Bear Lake at Wild Mountain.
