Somewhere in between a seven-game winning streak, and pair of losses to inferior opponents over the past two weeks, must exist the real Forest Lake girls basketball team.
The Rangers were at Woodbury on Jan. 15, and then hosted Stillwater on Friday, but neither contest ended in Forest Lake’s favor.
It’s hard to know which one was more frustrating.
Friday night’s loss to Stillwater was a 72-54 decision, in which the Ponies pulled away from a four-point lead they held at the end of the first half.
The double-digit defeat would come against a Stillwater squad (6-10, 2-6) that entered the night with just one victory in the Suburban East Conference.
The familiar trio of juniors — Annie Berner, Gina Lange and Molly Steele — all scored at least a dozen points apiece, but the Rangers couldn’t keep up with the Ponies’ Taylor Stippel (24 points), Alyssa Van Klei (14 points) and Abbie Selmecki (10 points).
Prior to Forest Lake’s fifth loss in six games, the girls were on the brink of knocking off a very good Woodbury program, but came up short in the 41-40 final.
The low-scoring struggle resulted in Forest Lake holding a 15-14 advantage heading into the break, but when the points nearly doubled in the second half, the Royals would squeak out their 11th win of the year.
Woodbury’s Caitie Christoffel dropped in two free throws with just six seconds remaining in the game, and that would be the difference.
After the two losses, the Rangers fall to 10-6, 4-4, and look to create another string of wins when they head to Mounds View (5-11, 2-6) and Hastings (4-11, 0-8) this week.
