On Martin Luther King Day, the Forest Lake dance team had its own, smaller-scale version of a dream, and in the Suburban East Conference finals, that dream came true.
“We took second at the last conference meet of the year in kick, and third in jazz, beating our rivals, Cretin-Derham Hall for the first time ever!” an excited Cheryl Smoczyk said.
The Forest Lake assistant coach went on to explain how the Rangers also knocked off Stillwater in both junior varsity routines as well as varsity jazz.
“(The) jayvee jazz performances scored the highest ever (for Forest Lake), just missing a win over Cretin’s jayvee.”
The dance team and its coaches had been hoping for a break in the standard voting, and on Jan. 21 they got it.
One judge gave the Rangers a score of 71 in kick, which is the highest score the squad has ever received.
In first place was Mounds View, who continued their dominance, earning top honors in both events in both varsity and junior varsity.
The Mustangs were rather selfish with the all-conference individual awards, claiming six of the 10 spots.
Forest Lake senior captains, Siri Simons and Kelsie Jurasin, along with juniors Kathleen Dunsmore and Allyson Kohler, were named honorable mention.
