Ranger wrestlers gear up for Friday’s ‘Main Event’

As a majority of varsity wrestlers were held out of the Forest Lake lineup last week due to match count totals, the Rangers made a relatively slow week even slower.
After last Thursday’s match at Park (a 55-19 loss), the boys were scheduled to compete at the Cambridge-Isanti Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19. With a roster full of athletes who were unable to wrestle — either because of illness or match count issues — Forest Lake head coach Billy Pierce decided to pull out of the invite.
Now the attention shifts to the team’s Main Event, which takes place this Friday, Jan. 25, against the No. 2 ranked Hastings Raiders.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Pierce said. “This is the best team we’ve faced heads up in a dual this season.”
Friday is also Alumni Night. All wrestling alums are invited to attend, including wrestlers, coaches, cheerleaders, statisticians and managers.
With the highly regarded Raiders coming to town, and the expectation of a large crowd, Forest Lake should have its typical roster of Morgans, Janssens, Kolbows and Nelsons back in place.
“I hope so,” Pierce laughed. “I hope we have the full meal-deal because we’re ready to go.”
Freshmen at state
The Forest Lake ninth grade team competed at the state tournament last Saturday, where the Rangers went 1-2 on the day.
