An editorial written by Cliff Buchan, news editor of the Forest Lake Times, received a second place award in the 2007 Minnesota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest. The editorial was on the topic of an apparent conflict of interest that centered on Forest Lake City Councilman Bo Bogotty and his family relationship with a downtown bar and restaurant. The editorial tied for second place in the Herman Roe Editorial Writing Award category named in memory of the late Northfield News editor who was interested in politics and believes newspapers should take strong editorial stands. The top award went to Robin Washington of the Duluth News Tribune. Buchan’s editorial was judged in a second place tie with Ed Lee of the Le Center Leader. The award was presented Jan. 24.
