Walsh to speak at Fairview Lakes Medical Center on Monday, Feb. 11 PDF Print
Wednesday, 30 January 2008
During the month of February, Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming will be celebrating its 10th anniversary.  Kicking off the celebration at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11 is an appearance by nationally recognized author and speaker Dr. David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family.

The program is free; however, advance reservations are required and setting will be strictly limited to those registered. To make your reservation, contact Fairview OnCall at (612) 672-7272. Out of consideration for others, please do not reserve a seat if attendance is not absolutely certain.

Walsh, who has emerged as one of the world’s leading authorities on parenting and the impact of media on children’s health and development will be speaking on the topic of his latest national best seller No:Why Kids – of All Ages – Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It.

The presentation is aimed at parents, educators and youth group leaders. It will be preceded at 5 p.m. by a Parent Resource Fair at which Fairview Lakes Health Services and various community agencies will share information on programs and services for children and families.

“We feel very fortunate to be able to present Dr. Walsh to our community,” says Carla Norelius, director of community health outreach for Fairview Lakes Health Services, “as his speaking schedule is booked for months in advance.”

His latest book addresses how the media encourages a culture of “more, easy, fast and fun” and undermines the traits kids need to succeed in school and in life – namely, self-discipline and the ability to delay gratification. The book has sparked a statewide grassroots “Say Yes to No” campaign among educators, parent-teacher associations, early childhood programs, youth groups and faith communities. More than 100 elementary and secondary schools in Minnesota have signed up for the campaign.

Since 1994, Walsh has authored nine books. That year, he wrote a ground-breaking book Selling Out America’s Children about the impact of media violence on kids.

In 1995, Walsh created the National Institute on Media and the Family, a non-profit organization dedicated to maximizing the benefits and minimizing the harm of media on children’s health and development through research education and advocacy. Fairview Health Services became a founding sponsor of the Institute.

Since that time, Walsh has testified before Congressional committees on the effects of video games on children and teens. A consultant to the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Education of Japan, he is frequently quoted on TV, radio and in newspapers.

In 2004, he wrote Why Do They Act That Way?: A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen, which was also a national best seller.

Walsh has a doctorate in psychology but speaks from experience. He spent 10 years teaching and coaching high school students before joining Fairview Health Services where Walsh developed and directed innovative counseling programs for youth and families.
