Elk River swept North Branch in the opening round of section volleyball play last Wednesday, but their momentum did not carry over into their quarterfinal matchup against Forest Lake. The host Rangers rolled over the Elks on Friday by a score of 25-14, 25-13, 25-8.
A solid group effort sent second-seeded Forest Lake on to the final four of Section 7AAA. Cassy Tessier had three aces, five blocks and five kills. Lexi Alm totaled 14 kills, 10 digs and six aces. Lynette Benson blocked nine shots and had six kills.
The sweep set up a rematch against Duluth East on Wednesday night. The Greyhounds (23-3) suffered one of their rare losses to Forest Lake in early October. The Rangers prevailed 21-25, 25-14, 15-10 on their way to winning Duluth East’s tournament.
“They have a nice team, strong outside and libero for sure,” said Forest Lake coach Sherri Alm. “We need to play our game and have fun doing it.”
The winner will advance to the section final against either No. 1 seed Andover (21-7) or No. 4 seed Anoka (15-13) Saturday night in Duluth. The Tornadoes beat Forest Lake in Anoka in early September. The Rangers did not play Andover in the regular season.
