The death toll in Sunday’s head-on collision on I-35 in Forest Lake has risen to three.

A Chanhassen man and his young son and the Wyoming youth who was driving the second vehicle were killed in the two-vehicle crash on I-35 just north of the US-8 overpass.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a northbound 1999 Chevy pickup lost control, went through the median, rolled and struck head-on a southbound 2008 Toyota Camry, killing the driver, James R. Holland, 45, and  his son, Jude P. Holland, 4.

The driver of the pickup, Eric P. Sprouse, 18, of Wyoming,  was ejected from his vehicle. He was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale where he died on Monday.

“We know what happened. We don’t know why,” said Sgt. Pat McArdle of the Minnesota State Patrol who responded to the call.

McArdle said the pickup driven by Sprouse was traveling in the left lane. According to witness reports, the truck began to fishtail before entering the center median and rolling.

The crash was reported at 10:57 a.m. and resulted in the southbound lanes of the freeway being closed for about four hours.

Holland and his son were both dead at the scene, the State Patrol said.

A passenger in the pickup, Dustin W. Covey, 20, of Wyoming, received non-life threatening injuries.

McArdle said interviews with Covey were inconclusive in helping authorities determine what caused the truck to begin fishtailing.

Alcohol is not believed to be at fault, McArdle said, adding that results of toxicology tests have not yet been returned.

Both Covey and Sprouse were not wearing seat belts.Holland was belted and his son was secured in a child seat, the State Patrol said.

McArdle said Holland had spent the weekend at a cabin in northern Minnesota with a high school buddy and their young sons. Holland and his son had reportedly left for home early to attend a birthday party for Holland's brother.

Both Sprouse and Covey are originally from Carrolton, MO, which is northeast of Kansas City. McArdle said Sprouse had recently moved to Minnesota to join his friend,Covey, and was looking for employment.

They were living with relatives in the Linwood Township area of Anoka County, he said.

Five Forest Lake police officers were at the scene.
