An employee of Applebee’s in Forest Lake was the victim of a carjacking as she was ending her shift at the restaurant early Sunday morning.

The 20-year-old woman from Chisago City and a co-worker from North Branch, fell victim to the carjacking at 1:17 a.m., Chief of Police Clark Quiring said.

Quiring said the two women left Applebee’s and were walking to their car in the Target parking lot. As they were about to enter the car, Quiring said a man approached the two, pulled a handgun and demanded the keys. The man drove off to the west on SW 3rd Avenue, the chief said.

The carjacker was described as a white male, 6-feet tall and weighing 210 to 220 pounds. He wore a black coat, black cap and blue jeans.

Police said the car was recovered later in the day on Sunday near the CR-11 exit from I-35 north of  Pine City. On Tuesday of this week authorities continued to process the vehicle in their search for clues to the carjacker.

DWI stop

A speed patrol on I-35 by Forest Lake police early Sunday led to multiple tickets for a North Dakota man.

City officers on patrol at 1:14 a.m. clocked a northbound vehicle traveling at 102 miles an hour, Quiring said.

The driver of the Dodge pickup was identified as Joshua J. Porter, 30, of Bismarck, ND.

He was booked in the Washington County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving and open bottle.

Off-road driving

Police in Forest Lake continue to investigate a report of vandalism to private property in the business area north of W. Broadway Ave. on Sunday morning.

Chief Quiring said police were called to check out an abandoned vehicle in the ditch on the north side of Broadway Car Wash and Tires Plus.

Quiring said officers observed damage to grass at a number of area businesses as it appeared the vehicle had been driven through grass areas and parking lots at Perkins, Burger King, Car X, Kennedy Transmission,  Culvers, Tires Plus and Broadway Car Wash.

Police believe the vehicle was driven from west to east on the back side of the businesses where there is no road. The vehicle was unoccupied when it was found at 6:48 a.m. Sunday.

Police contacted the vehicle owner. An 18-year-old from May Township said he was at a party in Linwood and was being taken home by friends, but was dropped off at White Castle in Forest Lake by friends because he was getting sick. The man, who picked up by police, denied driving the vehicle.

He said the vehicle had been left in Linwood and he had no idea who drove the truck to Forest Lake.

Police are reviewing business surveillance video and talking to witnesses in attempts to learn who may have been driving the vehicle. No damage estimate to property was available.
