| Forest Lake Times captures top award in ECM newspaper contest |

The Forest Lake Times has won the top award in the annual ECM Better Newspaper Contest. At Monday night’s shareholder’s meeting in Ham Lake, the paper was honored with the Elmer L. Andersen for General Excellence Award, presented in memory of the company founder and former state governor. The Forest Lake Times in all won 11 awards in the newspaper competition. The newspaper won four first-place awards and two second-place awards, while editors and reporters won five first place and second-place awards for stories and photographs published during the contest period from the final quarter of 2008 through the first nine months of the current year. Clint Riese, sports editor, was named sportswriter of the year, repeating his performance from the 2008 competition. Julian Andersen, ECM publisher and chief executive officer, presided over the annual shareholder’s meeting. Awards In newspaper awards, the Forest Lake Times won first place awards for: •General Excellence (Elmer L. Andersen award). •Best Sports Section. •Best Editorial Page. •Best Typography and Design. The newspaper won second place awards for: •Best Use of Photography as a Whole. •Best Special Section (2009 Progress . In categories for individuals, Riese won first-place honors for best sports feature story and best sports news story. He also received a third-place award for best sports column and honorable mention recognition for best social issues feature story. Riese’s sports feature honor recognized his story about a Forest Lake High School student who was seriously injured in a car crash and her efforts to continue her pursuits of a scholarship as a college cheerleader. The best sports news story was for an account of the efforts by two area boys to rescue an injured bald eagle. Cliff Buchan, news editor, won first-place honors for best coverage of a meeting and feature photography. He also won a second place award in feature photography. Buchan’s top honor in meeting coverage was for his report from a school board meeting and board interviews of candidates for superintendent of schools. His top feature photo was an image made at the grand opening of the Forest Lake Sports Center Complex. More Detail The Elmer Andersen General Excellence Award recognizes depth, breadth and quality of news coverage, quality of the editorial page and relevance to the community, the quantity and quality of pictorial material and the overall appearance of the newspaper. The Elk River Star News was judged second in the general excellence competition. In overall competition, the Forest Lake Times received the most firsts, seconds and honorable mention in the contest. The ABC Newspapers was second overall for the number of awards. Derrick Williams of This Week Farmington-Lakeville was named writer of the year. Judges for the 2009 ECM editorial contest were journalism professors from St. Cloud State University and editors and reporters at the St. Cloud Times daily newspaper. |
