When Forest Lake faced Mounds View and Hastings in early December, the girls basketball team was able to pick up wins No. 5 and 6 on the season. After the Rangers knocked off the same two schools last Tuesday and Friday, Forest Lake (12-6, 6-4) looks to keep another win streak in motion as they take on Cretin-Derham Hall, Park and Chisago Lakes this week.

And it turns out the pair of victories are something head coach Jen Wagner can now cross off her To Do list.

“As far as last week goes, it was just an outstanding week for the team. Since I have been at Forest Lake, we have never beat any team in the conference twice in the season,” she said. “It was very important that we got our confidence back and got back to having some fun.”

The 45-29 defeat of Hastings occurred on Friday night, in what Wagner felt was a tremendous showing by the entire team.

“Adri Acosta had an outstanding game defensively, and Audrey Mills was able to provide us some energy off the bench,” she said. “Bottom line — it was a great team effort and we were able to celebrate Mary Blake’s 18th birthday on the long bus ride home. The kids were fired up and were playing for each other. Extremely rewarding to watch how much fun they were having.”

Annie Berner had the most fun on offense, going for 17 points to lead all scorers. Behind her was a small group of Rangers who balanced the box score, as Abi Iverson and Gina Lange dropped in eight points each, and Molly Steele finished with seven.

The girls started the week on the road with a much shorter trip down to Mounds View.

With Gina Lange and Molly Steele pacing the offense, Forest Lake pulled out to an eight-point lead at the break, and then maintained the advantage in the second half for a 59-50 win.

Lange (13.4 ppg, 11.1 rpp) would end the night with 22 points, while Steele collected 15.

Berner (15.4 ppg, 9.1 rpp) would follow with nine points in this one, and Iverson chipped in with seven points.

The Rangers started a busy stretch on Tuesday, with a home game against Cretin, before entertaining both Park and Chisago Lakes at home.

“Big week,” Wagner said in reference to the upcoming schedule. “Saturday (Chisago Lakes at 3 p.m.) is also Senior Night so there will be a little extra emotion in that game.”
