AARP offers free tax help to low-income residents, seniors |

Senior citizens and low-to-middle income residents in the Forest Lake area who need filing tax returns will once again find a helping hand here.
The AARP Tax Aide Program, sponsored by AARP and supported by the IRS and Minnesota Revenue Department, involves volunteers offering free tax preparation service to clients that need tax help.
Regular tax consulting sessions are offered every Tuesday and Thursday in February and March and the first two weeks of April at the Forest Lake Senior Community Center, 767 SW 4th St.
Area residents needing the free tax help should call the senior center at 651-464-5833 to schedule an appointment.
Special arrangements will be made for other days at area senior and care centers, as needed.
All volunteers are trained in tax law, tax returns and will prepare returns on computer e-filing to provide efficient, complete and accurate returns for quick refunds.
This service is focused on consulting for seniors and for low-to-middle income clients.
In 2007, more than 400 clients received service at the Forest Lake site.
All tax law provisions for deductions, adjustments and tax credits will be considered for the client. Many clients find they are due refunds, program organizers indicate.
Federal, state and Minnesota Property Tax returns are provided.
The AARP Tax Aide Program welcomes questions from clients, such as, do they need to file, what income is included, what are their legal obligations, and other questions.
Clients who have returns beyond the programs’ training will be advised to see a certified public accountant or a professional tax service.
The goal of he program is to provide a tax service for client confidence in their tax returns that meets the requirements of the IRS and the state revenue department.
