In most years, the Forest Lake Lions Club would be happy to grab one first-place winner in the Lions District 5M-7 Drug Awareness Poster Contest.

So you can imagine the smile on El Ewert’s face when students from the Forest Lake area won two of the top six places in the district contest. Ewert may never have been so tickled in the 15 years that he has co-chaired the event for the local club.

When awards were announced last month, local students had indeed won two of the top six places in the district contest. Student artwork representing 53 Lions and Lioness clubs were in competition.

“This is impressive,” Ewert said last week in presenting awards to students at various schools in the Forest Lake area.

At Forest View Elementary, kindergarten student Alexis Riepe won first-place in her grade-level club competition and went on to capture first place in the district contest. She won $50 for her local effort.

The theme of her poster was: “Don’t eat someone else’s medicine. You could get sick and die.”

At St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary School, Ellen Steffes won the club’s Grade 3-4 competition and also went on to win top honors in the district event.

The theme of her poster was: “Drugs play tricks on your brain. Don’t let the joke be on you.”
