The Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C., has announced that Lakes International Language Academy, a public charter Spanish-immersion elementary school in Forest Lake, has won a major national award. LILA has been recognized as a 2010 National School of Character “Profiles in Character” award winner. Only 18 schools across the United States were selected for the honor, which is based on an evaluation of each school’s strengths in areas such as social-emotional learning or meeting individual student needs within the CEP’s Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education. “We’re thrilled to receive the award,” said LILA Director Cam Hedlund. “When Lakes International opened in 2004, we deliberately chose the Responsive Classroom approach for positive classroom management in combination with the student character goals of the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Programme. “It’s a complementary fit that we’ve demonstrated benefits our students’ learning experience. To become a model school in just five years is a credit to the staff’s exceptional commitment.” The student traits that LILA’s IBO Primary Years Programme curriculum works toward include fostering world citizens who are inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers that are knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced and reflective. CEP, the nation’s leading advocate for quality character education, will acknowledge LILA’s achievement at a special ceremony later this fall. Each year since 1998, the National School of Character awards program has recognized K–12 schools and districts that provide exemplary comprehensive character education programs that consistently yield positive results in student behavior, citizenship, school climate, and academic performance.
