FL student honored for green efforts |

Michelle Olson, a student at Forest Lake High School in the Agriculture Education program, was recently honored with the Governor’s Certificate of Commendation.
Each year the Minnesota State Horticultural Society recognizes individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to horticulture and greening efforts in public gardens, community projects and through exemplary community achievements.
Individuals, projects and activities of neighborhood groups, governmental organizations, garden clubs and communities that have meritoriously contributed to gardening and rejuvenating communities through plants are honored each year.
Fourteen award winners were nominated by fellow community members from across the state for their outstanding contributions to horticulture and greening efforts and recognized by the Minnesota State Horticultural Society. Winners were announced at the State Awards and Recognition Event held at in the Heritage Room at Bachman’s Garden Center in Minneapolis on Feb. 2. Chief Operating Officer Rose Eggert gave welcoming remarks, and presented the awards. Chuck Levine was Master of Ceremonies.
Olson has planned and organized student service projects at the school. She assumed a leadership role in the creation of the FFA Nursery Landscape contest at the Minnesota State Fair, which won a blue ribbon.
Olson prepared an instructional power point to familiarize students with 120 Minnesota trees. She is a student teaching assistant in the Agriculture Department.
