Hietala’s Old World Meats, 1107 Scandia Trail N., is closing. Store owner Dan Hietala made the announcement this week. He said the store is now in process of selling its remaining meat and grocery inventory and will soon be out of business. Hietala’s Old World Meats, a family run operation, has been providing meat products to the community for four full years. Hietala said the meat market was losing money and could no longer continue operation. He said the general economic downturn was a factor along with last summer’s full season of road construction and new competition in Forest Lake from other convenience stores. He said some customers were also reluctant to stop at the Highway 97 store because of difficulty leaving the location. “We want to thank our loyal customers for their patronage and wish this decision did not have to be made,” Hietala said. In all, eight store employees, including Hietala, will be looking for work.
