FLBA baseball clinic, tryouts
Get ready for traveling baseball tryouts by attending FLBA's pre-tryout clinic on Saturday, March 1. Open to all players, ages 9-14. Held at FLHS, head coach Brian Raabe and his staff will run the clinic. First session for 9-11 year-olds is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Second session for 12-14 year-olds is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $20. •10-year-olds (FLHS gym): Friday, March 14, from 6-8:30 p.m.
•11-year-olds (FLHS gym): Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
•12-year-olds (FLHS gym): Saturday, March 15, from 1:30-4 p.m.
•13-year-olds (FLHS fields): Saturday, April 12, from 9-11:30 a.m.
•14-year-olds (FLHS fields): Saturday, April 12, from 12:30-3 p.m.
Softball fundraiser at Applebee's
Join the U14 A girls fastpitch softball team at Applebee's for their Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast on Saturday, March 1, and support the team's trip to Nationals. Breakfast is from 8-10 a.m., and the cost is $5. All proceeds go directly to the travel expenses to the Midwest National Tournament. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or in advance by calling 651-433-2551.
FLAAA meets on 2nd Tuesday
The FLAAA holds its regular monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month at The Cornerstone in Wyoming at 7 p.m. Questions about the FLAAA or meetings call Terri or Larry Porter at 651-464-8094. The next meeting is Tuesday, March, 11.
Educational softball clinic
Who: Clinics for any coach, mom, dad or guardian in the Forest Lake area who is interested in learning more about softball. These clinics are local and free.
Where: Southwest Junior High (West Gym)
When: Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (A pizza lunch will be provided)
10 a.m.: Lucas Goring on “The Short Game”. Lucas is a professional fastpitch player and a member of the U.S. men’s national team who will speak on sacrifice and drag bunting, as well as slap hitting. He will also touch on base running.
11 a.m.: Gregg Cascaes on Hitting. Gregg is also a professional fastpitch player and member of the U.S. men’s national team, who will speak on all aspects of hitting. Gregg will also be including some great drills into his presentation.
12 - 12:30 p.m.: Lunch from Domino’s
12:30-1:00: Don Cramer and Angie Ryan will touch on the philosophy of the Forest Lake High School program as well as the Forest Lake Area Fastpitch Association.
1:00-1:45: Erin Casey and Angie Ryan will speak about throwing and defensive fundamentals. This session will include easy drills that should be done at most practices throughout your season.
1:45-2:30: Stan Waldhauser, Forest Lake softball’s pitching instructor, will be going through the mechanics of fastpitch pitching. He will also being incorporating some demonstrations from Forest Lake pitchers into his presentation.
2:30-3:30: Angie Ryan on offensive and defensive strategy. Angie will speak on situational play calling, reading the defense, and calling pitches.
FLAFA's monthly meeting
The Forest Lake Fastpitch Association (FLAFA) holds its monthly meeting on the third Thursday of each month at Stella's (formerly Dummys) at 7 p.m. The next meeting is Thursday, March 20.
The Rock's women's golf league
The Castlewood Women’s Golf League will hold an informational meeting on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at Stella’s on 97. Women golfers of all abilities are invited to attend and join the league. New players are definitely welcome. Golfers are welcome to form their own team or league organizers will help individuals find a place on a team at the meeting. The league plays on Thursday nights at Castlewood Golf Course in Forest Lake, with tee-off at 5:30 p.m. League play follows a match-play format, where two players from a team compete against two players from another team each week.
League play starts in late April and runs every week through early September. The cost is $80 league fee per player plus $1000 per team for greens fees (split between 4-6 players per team). The individual league fee includes handicapping fees with the Minnesota Golf Association, weekly event prizes, championship fee and an end-of-season banquet and prizes.
