FLHS Percussion Festival  

Saturday, March 8, the Forest Lake High School Ranger drumline will be hosting its 10th annual percussion festival. The festival will be held at Forest Lake High School from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This year’s line-up will keep you on the edge of your seat as you watch the high-energy and innovation of scheduled drumlines. Drumline groups from high schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin will present programs which include original music, choreography and costumes. The festival will host the following drumlines from Wisconsin: Kenosha, Menasha and River Valley. Performing from Minnesota: Albany, Anoka, Becker, Buffalo, Burnsville, Cold Springs, Eagan, Forest Lake, Fridley, Highland Park, Irondale, Rochester and South St. Paul.

The Forest Lake High School Ranger Drumline consists of 20 junior and senior high students. They will be presenting this year’s program titled “Circuit,” based on the electronic synth music of the alternative band Depeche Mode. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students.
Open to the public. Come and experience the energy and action put forth by these talented drumline ensembles.

FLAAA meets on 2nd Tuesday

The FLAAA holds its regular monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month at The Cornerstone in Wyoming at 7 p.m. Questions about the FLAAA or meetings call Terri or Larry Porter at 651-464-8094. The next meeting is Tuesday, March, 11.

FLBA baseball tryouts

FLBA traveling baseball tryout dates have been set. For more information, call Rick Degendorfer at 651-462-5257, or go to www.flbaseball.org.

•10-year-olds (FLHS gym): Friday, March 14, from 6-8:30 p.m.
•11-year-olds (FLHS gym): Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
•12-year-olds (FLHS gym): Saturday, March 15, from 1:30-4 p.m.
•13-year-olds (FLHS fields): Saturday, April 12, from 9-11:30 a.m.
•14-year-olds (FLHS fields): Saturday, April 12, from 12:30-3 p.m.

Educational softball clinic   

Who: Clinics for any coach, mom, dad or guardian in the Forest Lake area who is interested in learning more about softball. These clinics are local and free.
Where: Southwest Junior High (West Gym)
When: Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (A pizza lunch will be provided)
10 a.m.: Lucas Goring on “The Short Game”. Lucas is a professional fastpitch player and a member of the U.S. men’s national team who will speak on sacrifice and drag bunting, as well as slap hitting.  He will also touch on base running.
11 a.m.: Gregg Cascaes on Hitting.  Gregg is also a professional fastpitch player and member of the U.S. men’s national team, who will speak on all aspects of hitting. Gregg will also be including some great drills into his presentation.
12 - 12:30 p.m.: Lunch from Domino’s
12:30-1:00: Don Cramer and Angie Ryan will touch on the philosophy of the Forest Lake High School program as well as the Forest Lake Area Fastpitch Association.  
1:00-1:45: Erin Casey and Angie Ryan will speak about throwing and defensive fundamentals. This session will include easy drills that should be done at most practices throughout your season.
1:45-2:30: Stan Waldhauser, Forest Lake softball’s pitching instructor, will be going through the mechanics of fastpitch pitching.  He will also being incorporating some demonstrations from Forest Lake pitchers into his presentation.   
2:30-3:30: Angie Ryan on offensive and defensive strategy.  Angie will speak on situational play calling, reading the defense, and calling pitches.

Bluebird workshop at O'Brien

Join everyone at William O'Brien State Park on Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m., as people learn about the life and adaptations of the beautiful Eastern Bluebird. Special guest presenter Richard Hjort, a lifetime bluebirder, will delight with slides and stories of these beautiful birds. Then if you are interested, the Friends Group of William O’Brien will help you as you build a bluebird nestbox to bring bluebirds to your own backyard. There are a limited number of nestbox kits for purchase, so please call the park at 651-433-0500 to reserve yours. Bring a hammer if you are going to build a nestbox. Free nestbox construction plans will be available. William O’Brien State Park is located two miles North of Marine-On-St. Croix, on Highway 95. The program is free, but a Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is needed to enter any Minnesota State Park.

Lighting test at harness track

Running Aces Harness Park, located at 15201 Zurich St., Columbus, will be testing the exterior track lighting system on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25. For these two consecutive days the track lights will be on from dusk until dawn of the next day.

FLAFA's monthly meeting

The Forest Lake Fastpitch Association (FLAFA) holds its monthly meeting on the third Thursday of each month at Stella's (formerly Dummys) at 7 p.m. The next meeting is Thursday, March 20.

The Rock's women's golf league

The Castlewood Women’s Golf League will hold an informational meeting on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at Stella’s on 97. Women golfers of all abilities are invited to attend and join the league. New players are definitely welcome. Golfers are welcome to form their own team or league organizers will help individuals find a place on a team at the meeting. The league plays on Thursday nights at Castlewood Golf Course in Forest Lake, with tee-off at 5:30 p.m. League play follows a match-play format, where two players from a team compete against two players from another team each week.

League play starts in late April and runs every week through early September. The cost is $80 league fee per player plus $1000 per team for greens fees (split between 4-6 players per team). The individual league fee includes handicapping fees with the Minnesota Golf Association, weekly event prizes, championship fee and an end-of-season banquet and prizes. Swimming and diving clinic

Fifth and 6th graders, and level 5 and 6 swimmers are invited to attend the third annual Swimming and Diving Clinic.
Sundays, April 13, 20 and 27 at Southwest Jr. High, 943 9th Ave., Forest Lake. Cost is $20 for the clinic, plus bonus gift. Time: 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Be a Forest Lake Ranger swimmer and/or diver for a day.  On April 13 and 20, the high school varsity boys and girls swimming and diving teams will teach the fundamentals of their respective sport. For swimming, the clinic will include the four competitive strokes, turns and starting block take-offs, whereas the divers will be teaching diving board approaches. On April 27 all participants are invited back to join the varsity swimmers and divers in a mock meet. Included with the registration is a bonus gift for all participants (1 per participant).
Registration deadline is Thursday, April 10.

OMC hosts 5K run/walk

Spring is just around the corner and a great way to kick start your fitness goals is at the Healthy Heart 5K Run/Walk, hosted by Osceola Medical Center.  This event is April 19. Participants will take a scenic route through the community of Osceola starting at the high school. Individuals, families and teams are invited to participate. The run/walk is hosted by OMC, a critical access hospital and clinic along the St. Croix River in Osceola. Registration starts at 7 a.m.; the race starts at 8:30 a.m. Awards will be presented on or around 9:30 a.m. Entry fees are $15 by April 4 and $20 after April 4 and on race day.

Proceeds of the event will go to the Think Pink Campaign, which is raising money for the region’s first digital mammography unit. The Think Pink Campaign is sponsored by the Osceola Community Health Foundation.
