Holiday spirit will abound at Faith Lutheran Church in Forest Lake as the Minnesota Boychoir performs its 2007-2008 Annual Winter Concert on Sunday, Dec. 16.
Under the direction of Mark S. Johnson, “From the Realms of Glory” will feature Allegro, Cantabile, Concert Choir and the Junior Chorus performing sacred and secular music in a variety of styles, representing many cultures and languages, along with familiar carols and songs of the season.
Johnson began his work with the choir in 1991 as the accompanist. He holds a degree in music education from St. Olaf College, and taught junior high choral music for six years before becoming full-time director for the Boychoir in 1993.
Now in its 46th season, the Boychoir is comprised of over 115 young men from around the Twin Cities.
The Minnesota Boychoir, founded in 1962, is the oldest boychoir in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan area.
The Boychoir’s reputation for excellence has brought invitations from local and national music conventions, as well as sporting events and touring Broadway companies.
They have performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Prague Philharmonic, on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion National Public Radio Show and Katie McMahon, Celtic recording sensation.
Last season, the choirboys were featured in performances with the Minnesota Orchestra, VocalEssence, the University of Minnesota and Robert Robinson and the Twin Cities Gospel Choir.
The choir’s schedule also includes national and international tours. Previous tours have thrilled audiences in 10 states and on five continents.
This past summer, in celebration of their 45th Anniversary Season, the Minnesota Boychoir were headliners at the World Voices Australia International Choral Festivities at Sydney’s famed Opera House.
As the Boychoir performs in prestigious venues and collaborate with prominent ensembles, they gain insight into the rigorous and rewarding world of professional musicianship.
The Minnesota Boychoir trains young men to be outstanding musicians and strives to help them develop a sense of poise and self-confidence through education and performance. The Boychoir challenges boys and young men from many backgrounds to the highest standards of choral music, nurtures the development of exceptional character as well as inspiring and benefiting the community.
As they travel around the United States and globe, they learn the power of the universal language of music.
