Work at the committee and board level for a revised Policy 438 regulating employment and other background checks continues in ISD 831. The school board on March 6 reviewed the revised policy and set off a final decision to the March 27 meeting. Under the proposed policy, all applicants who receive an offer for employment with the district must complete two criminal background checks. The change follows state law and existing policy. The new policy continues to require background checks of volunteers assigned to work with students at overnight and/or off-campus activities. New language requires all Community Education volunteers working with school-age children and vulnerable adults and all independent contractors who work with school-age children or vulnerable adults in settings where they are not directly supervised by school district personnel to undergo background checks. While candidates for employment and independent contractors will be required to pay the cost of the background checks, the school district will pay for the checks required on volunteers. The district currently uses Orange Tree as a private firm and the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for its two forms of criminal background checks. Any additional changes will come back for a final review March 27.
