There was never a question that Gary Gilbertson loved the land and making band music.

Born on a family farm in Scandia, Gilbertson carried on the family tradition and took the occupation to a new level with Gilbertson Farms, a business he ran with his wife Annette and their family.

Gilbertson, 54, who died of a heart attack on March 29, also loved marching band. He was a musician while a student at Forest Lake High School and continued that love as a longtime member of the Forest Lake City Marching Band and an active band parent at Chisago Lakes High School in Lindstrom where his children were students.

He helped establish and expand Gilbertson Farms in Scandia. The operating started as a sweet corn business which expanded its produce inventory and sales network. He was a vendor at a number of metro area farmer’s markets.

In addition to his love of marching band, Gilbertson  also volunteered as a ski instructor for Courage Center and Wild Mountain. He also worked with high school and youth wrestling, football and ski teams.

Gilbertson was also a 30-year member of Teamster’s Local Union 120.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Annette, and three children, Mark, Melisa and Carol. A funeral service was April 3 at Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia with interment at Elim Cemetery.

Memorials given in his name will be used to support Gary’s favorite projects.
