A one-year-old toddler who wandered away from her father and fell face first in open water of a pond is recovering after being taken by air ambulance to Children's Hospital of St. Paul. Forest Lake police were called to the home in the 20000 block of Ingersoll Ave. N. at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday after the father of the little girl pulled her from the pond where she was found face down and kicking.
Chief of Police Clark Quiring said the little one was in good condition on Thursday at the hospital. Police worked to open the girl's airway and wrapped her in blankets until ambulance crews arrived. She was breathing but unconscious when she was taken by Life Link to the hospital in St. Paul, he said.
The chief said the girl's dad was outside the home feeding the family dogs when a three-year-old sibling ran off and diverted the father's attention. With ice conditions now poor on most ponds and lake surfaces, Quiring urged caution when approaching bodies of water and to keep close supervision on young children.
