As promised, despite the dreary conditions, Running Aces Harness Park in Columbus opened its doors at 4:30 p.m. last Friday for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was later followed by the first of eight races.
A large crowd crammed the park's entryway and lobby for the ceremony (at left, Ron Banks, President, Minnesota Harness Racing Initiative, and to his left is Columbus Mayor Mel Mettler), and then approximately 3000 racing fans, local residents and curious newcomers made their way to the restaurant, the bar or back outside to watch the races.
The harness park is located west of the I-35 and TH-97 (CR-23) freeway exit, just south and west of Forest Lake. Last weekend's racing was the first in a three-month schedule that will continue until early July.
