The conditions were far from ideal on April 9, but the Forest Lake girls track and field team did compete at the White Bear Lake Relays, and did well enough to take sixth place.
Since this was a relay format, it meant every event had a team of four, or sometimes eight, participants.
“Well, it was cold but we finally have our first meet in the books,” head coach Eric Kaluza shared with his squad.
“The high jump team of Christy Newell, Mary Blake, Audrey Mills and Chelsie Sobieck had a dominant showing and placed first,” assistant coach Corrin Kaluza noted.
“Towards the end of the event, there were seven jumpers left at the height of 4’10’’; all four of our jumpers were still in the running!”
Newell stayed in for one more height and cleared five feet in her first competition of the spring.
In the long jump pit, the girls pulled off a second place performance, while KC Pringle tied her personal best of 8’6” in the pole vault.
Other groups who attracted some attention can begin with the 3200-meter relay team, which earned third place in a field of eight schools.
“The 800 is a difficult race to learn,” Corrin said. “It is basically the distance version of a sprint.”
A pair of eighth-graders who are new to the distance — Mackenzie Galleberg and Jessica Rivard — were part of the quartet, and they joined Gina Lange and Elizabeth Peterson.
In the unique 8x200 relay, the Rangers came in third, with Shelby Simons turning in the fastest split of the eight, while Shannon Nelson was only a tenth of a second off Simons.
“Andrea Mogren also ran well for her first varsity race,” Corrin pointed out.
Forest Lake was at White Bear Lake again on Tuesday, and then head down to Apple Valley this Saturday.
