Early season track and field has its share of weather related issues, and then there are still the actual events to worry about.
Sloppy handoffs in relays or crossing into another lane can result in disqualifications, but those miscues should get corrected later in the spring.
Last Saturday, the Forest Lake boys track and field team participated in the Pony Classic in Stillwater, and even with a few flubs of their own, the Rangers came in fourth place, behind Andover, Mounds View and Stillwater.
“It went pretty well — I felt good about how we competed,” head coach Paul Kendrick said. “The kids were really pushing themselves.”
An illegal use of jewelry was called on Forest Lake’s distance medley relay team, where simply forgetting to remove a necklace caused the Rangers to be DQ’d from that event.
The post-race discovery knocked the boys out of fifth place, and removed at least 10 points from Forest Lake’s overall total.
During the shuttle hurdle relay, the Rangers were leading until their final hurdler hit the final hurdle, forcing him into the neighboring lane.
“If he doesn’t fall we win that relay,” Kendrick pointed out.
But those things happen in April. As the varsity team gets deeper into its schedule, Kendrick will continue to look for his squad to progress from one week to the next, and execute as a unit.
“This team can do some amazing things,” Kendrick shared.
That was shown by the triple jump trio of Griffin Lentsch, Rory Alt and Dillon Edelen, which set the all-time Forest Lake High School record, and the 400-meter relay team (Dillon Grant, Mitch Koenig, Dalton Keep and Dan Blaser), that butchered its handoffs but still won the race.
The Rangers were in Roseville on Tuesday and have the Hamline Elite on Friday evening.
