While other sports were being scratched and postponed from the schedule last week, the Forest Lake girls track and field team was able to run two varsity meets and one junior varsity competition, sometimes in spite of the weather.

Eagan was the site of the first meet, where an 11-team field provided the Rangers a sense of where they are and what they need to do in order to get to where they want to be.

“I feel we’re a team on the rise, but we still need some seasoning with our younger athletes,” head coach Eric Kaluza said.

A handful of highlights came from athletes like KC Pringle and Taylor Brett in the pole vault, and Mary Blake and Audrey Mills in the high jump, as both events had three Rangers in the top eight positions.

Holly Winberg and Mackenzie Galleberg broke the six-minute barrier in the mile, and “Amanda Johnson and Gaby Selg continue to improve in the throws,” Kaluza noted.

At Friday’s Hamline Elite Meet, Kristie Miller was the only girl to represent the Rangers, but Kaluza felt the junior sprinter performed “extremely well.”

Especially considering the rain, cold and dreary conditions that made it feel exactly like April in Minnesota.

Miller entered the 100-meter sprint as the 18th seed in a field of 18 runners. Not even 13 seconds later, the junior wound up in 10th place in a time of 12.93. That posting was also good enough to put her in 10th place in Forest Lake history.

This week’s forecast looks just as wet, but Forest Lake was at Roseville on Tuesday, and back in St. Paul on Saturday for the Hamline University Relays.
