Untold gratitude
We owe untold gratitude to the Scandia firefighters who absolutely saved our house from total destruction on Monday morning, April 28. Our metal chimney ignited a fire behind closed walls on our main living level. The fire came very close to exploding through the attic.
The firefighter’s very quick response time was critical, but we were amazed at how well they were organized and how methodically and deliberately they coordinated their efforts. They attacked with surgical precision, limiting peripheral and collateral damage, and under extreme conditions were considerate in minimizing the tear out, using very little water, and closing doors etc.
As firefighters came out of our house, sweating and coughing, they impressed us as being the ultimate humanitarians. They take time from their own activities and risk their lives to help people they don’t know.
We were impressed with their calm demeanor while we were dealing with the most traumatic experience of our lives. We admire these people and after having such a close encounter we have substantial additional respect for the realm of their activities.
This successful endeavor is an indication of the high quality of life enjoyed by Scandia citizens that can be attributed to the high standards set by our outstanding city leadership.
Thanks to our heroic firefighters, we can now spend a few more of our golden years here at what we call Lakamaga Lodge. Gratefully and humbly indebted to heroes.

KC’s success
The Knights of Columbus Council 3657 of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Forest Lake would like to thank all members of the community who dug deep into their pockets to support our annual Tootsie Roll Campaign.
More than $4500 was collected.
All of the money will be donated to organizations that are involved in helping individuals with physical or mental disabilities.
The Knights of Columbus would especially like to thank the Forest Lake, Columbus and Wyoming stores that allowed us to use their store fronts to distribute Tootsie Rolls.

It was great!
I would like to compliment the Sunshine Pre-School Kindergarten Enrichment Class and their teachers, Cheri Pederson, Laura Kinney and Anne Nelson, for the tremendous job they did with their rhythm band performance.
The kids demonstrated basic music skills using rhythm sticks, maracas, triangles, drums, tambourines and cymbals. All the songs they played employed the use of echo; where the students had to listen and then repeat what they heard. They started repeating one measure at a time and then played two measures at a time. First with a single instrument and then adding all the other instruments.
The highlight was when they did “Minuet in G” and “Sambalele.” It was amazing! It’s hard to believe these kids and teachers are only together 2.5 hours twice a week.
Thank you for the wonderful performance!

Iraq connection?
In answer to “Tell the Vets” Thursday, May 1. To hear what the “Veterans for Freedom” have to say may well have been the right thing, but only with the assurance that the “Winter Soldiers” who also served in Iraq were invited to speak.
The “Winter Soldiers” are active in improving the mental and general health care system for the treatment of returning war veterans. The “Winter Soldiers” have a very different story to tell about their experiences in the same war.
I find it interesting the “Tell the Vets” letter connects the 9/11 tragedy with the war on Iraq. Although we were led to believe a connection existed, we now know every reason to preempt a war on Iraq was proved to be false. One of those reasons being Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attack.
Maybe this will help.
The 19 9/11 hijackers were identified as being citizens of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Egypt. None were Iraqi.
