A comfortable win sure makes  for a smoother ride on a long road trip, and after  the Forest Lake boys track and field team took first place at the Rochester Mayo Invitational, they were able to coast back home and prepare for Tuesday’s True Team in White Bear Lake.

The Rangers finished Saturday, May 3, with 964.50 points, while Woodbury was second at 830.50.

Fully aware that bigger competition was coming on May 6 at the True Team Meet, Forest Lake head coach Paul Kendrick limited how much his boys would do in Rochester.

In the sprints, Kendrick’s athletes would only run a maximum of two races, and the distance runners were capped at just one.

As for the field events, the Rangers were fine tuning who would be counted on at Tuesday’s meet.

“We didn’t set the lineup to go all out, but we did have a very solid lineup there,” Kendrick said.

“For the limited amount of meets we’ve had, I thought the kids executed really well.”

His comment might as well serve as a segue to events like the 100 meters, the 200 meters and the high jump.

Mitch Koenig, Dillon Grant and Dan Blaser swept the top three spots in the 100, and Dalton Keep and Josh Nielsen went a respective one-two in the 200.

In the high jump, Jimmy Plain and Griffin Lentsch tied at 6-0, with Sam Miller taking third at 5-10.

Other notable performances were turned in by Nielsen in the 400 meters (fourth), Nate Moen in the 1600 meters (second), Dillan Edelen in the 110-meter high hurdles (third), Brian Rivard in the 300-meter hurdles (third), Ryan Wright in the steeplechase (third), the 400-meter relay (first), the 800-meter relay (third), the distance medley relay (second), Rory Alt in the pole vault (second), Kenny Klein in the shot put (third), and Nick Wilson in the discus (fourth).

After Tuesday’s competition, the track and field team has a stint of junior varsity as well as ninth- and 10th-grade meets.

The varsity is back in action on Tuesday, May 20 at the Suburban East Conference Preliminaries, which will be held at Park (Cottage Grove).
