Will be Missed
Forest Lake is saying goodbye to a great business — Kelly’s Clothing Store in the Northland Mall.
They always had a nice selection of clothing for the seasons, just the right outfit for that tropical vacation or gift and the accessories to compliment the look.
John and Susan Kelly dedicated many, many years to providing quality, friendly service to our area.
They went out of their way to be cheerful and helpful.
Thank you and we will miss you.

God at Work!
On Sunday, May 4, while home after work in Forest Lake my life was put on hold when I was involved in a head-on crash at W. Broadway at 12th Street.
First responders, Forest Lake police, medical personnel and concerned citizens all came to my aid.
It was God at work in my life. So, thanks to all who helped and God bless.

Taxpayer alert
After reviewing my taxes and seeing every line item increase dramatically in 2008, I looked into the special levy that went up dramatically.
I was informed I recently was honored to become a taxpayer to help fund what I would call a special interest group, the Carnelian, Big Marine, St. Croix Watershed District.
I’ve asked questions and educated myself on who this district is.
This district was conceived in 1980 after residents petitioned for needed protection from flooding on Big Marine Lake and Carnelian Lake. The district fixed it, good job!
Twenty-eight years later it is still in existence and has grown into an animal that has the power to grab your tax dollar without anyone’s control.
I made the decision to ask the Scandia Council to pursue having tax paying citizens exempt from this organization, which has no accountability to anyone and does not represent the majority.
Currently, we the taxpayers are involved with this group by the city’s choice and it’s not mandated we belong.
Members of the district appear to have the power to grab our dollars as they see fit.
Did you know they have a current budget of about $500,000? They recently hired an administrator at a total cost of $80,000. Local government officials are not watching out for these actions.
If you want to see watershed districts in action and attempting to get more tax dollars, check out what’s happening in Forest Lake.
The way I see it, this group is just like any other conservation group such as Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.
The difference is we have a choice to fund these groups. The problem I have is a petition of few forced me to be involved, not the majority.
Why are taxpayers in our city forced into it?
After all this, it appears our city government chooses to be nice guys and is not interested in getting out of this district.
Local government needs to represent the majority, not special interest groups. Wake up taxpayers and let your local leaders know how you feel!
