Golfers seek consistency PDF Print

While the Rangers may be climbing into the top ten rankings, that doesn’t necessarily mean the Forest Lake girls golf team is playing the way head coach Joel Hall would like.

During the past week’s action, Hall saw his squad take another second place to Woodbury at Midland Hills, which was preceded by a third place finish at the Park Invitational on Thursday, May 8.

As far as May 12 goes, Forest Lake fought through a windy afternoon  to finish with a total score of 180. Those pesky and unbelievably consistent Woodbury Royals shot 169 to take first.

“Betsy (Kelly) continued her steady play and shot a two over par 38 on a tough course in even tougher conditions,” Hall said of the sophomore’s medalist effort. “She continues to impress me, if that even seems like a possibility any more.”

Within striking distance of Kelly was teammate Mallory Messin (third place), who turned in a 42, despite the fact she didn’t think she hit particularly well.

“Then we had a little trouble.” Hall pointed out.

Katie Nowicki struggled with her putter and finished with a 50, but Hall felt the blame could be placed on the recently aerated greens. Aerating may help with summer growth and the overall health of the green, but an abundance of dime-sized holes aren’t very helpful to a golfer.

Lauren Gravelle was solid at 50, and she was followed by a frustrated Emily Wislicenus at 54. Brittany Seifert completed Forest Lake’s scoring with another 54.

Trouble at Park

“To put it bluntly, we did not play well as a team,” Hall said after the girls shot a 177 on May 8.

The score put them in a tie for second, but after losing the playoff the Rangers wound up in third behind Woodbury and Roseville.

“Mallory and Katie Nowicki brought their ‘A’ game, but the rest of us were a little off,” Hall said.

Nothing was working for Wislicenus and Kelly, but Hall saw hope with Messin and Nowicki.

“The positive that I can think of from today is that Mallory has shown some definite signs of life, and Katie Nowicki is playing well,” he said. “(But) same old story — we just need all of them to click on the same day.”
