On Monday night the Forest Lake softball team made it four straight, as the girls defeated Mounds View 6-0.
The shutout victory provided a healthy dose of revenge for the Rangers, as this was the same Mustangs lineup that ended their four-game win streak earlier this spring.
Sammy Holien led off the first inning with a triple, and Lexi Alm knocked her in with a fielder’s choice. Oddly enough, everyone could have called it a night at this point as that would be the game winner.
“Cheree Franklin threw a fantastic game, only allowing three hits and striking out eight Mounds View batters,” head coach Angie Ryan noted.
And since the game did go on, so did the Forest Lake scoring.
In the third inning, Kelly Kent hit a one-out single, which was followed by a single by Holien. Kathy Crudo then singled as well, driving in Kent to make it 2-0.
The contest would remain close until there were two outs in the top of the fifth.
Alm got on base due to a Mounds View error, and Crudo’s triple would score Alm.
Krystal Plouff came through with a double to score Crudo, and then Franklin’s single brought Plouff home.
In the top of the seventh, Forest Lake added another run off more hit singles by Alm, Crudo and Franklin, with Franklin getting the RBI.
Holien was 4-for-4, with a double, a triple and a run scored; Crudo was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored; Franklin was 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Kent was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
“As a team we had 15 hits,” Ryan said. “This was a fun game all around; it’s good to see as we finish out the regular season.”
Earlier Action
Before piling up four consecutive victories, the Rangers stumbled by opening last week with two losses to Stillwater, followed by a 4-1 loss at White Bear Lake on May 7.
Forest Lake was able to turn things around last Thursday, with a 10-9, come from way behind, extra-inning win over Roseville.
“Being down 8-3 in the sixth inning is not a good feeling in front of so many fans, but our team came storming back,” Ryan said. “I was proud of their will to compete and their desire to win this game.”
The big rally sent the team on a two-game sweep of Duluth East and Duluth Denfeld on Friday, before facing Mounds View.
Next up for Forest Lake are nothing but home games, as the girls take on Cretin-Derham Hall on Wednesday night, Hastings on Thursday, and Minnetonka on Friday afternoon.
