In 2014, following controversial spending increases for the construction of the Forest Lake City Center and YMCA, Forest Lake residents swept a new City Council majority into power, a group of men who campaigned on fiscal conservativism and representing the voice of the people.

After a number of council clashes over the last four years and a split election in 2016, Forest Lake voters made another firm decision on Nov. 6 – one that will leave the council with completely different membership than the body in place after the 2014 election. Voters also selected the first female mayor and female council majority in city history.
